The White Horse Federation is a forward-thinking, high-performing multi-academy trust comprised of 32 primary, secondary and special schools and academies across South West England. Part of the Federation’s focus has been to reduce rising energy costs and minimise its impact on the environment.

At the heart of The White Horse Federation is a belief in using collaboration to provide a first-class education to a wide range of children. This means that every child understands what they are capable of, and can collectively strive for excellence.
— Dr Nicholas Capstick, OBE - CEO of The White Horse Federation

Bright Spark Energy was appointed by the federation via a procurement process to design and deliver a multi-site solar PV programme utilising academy roofs for generating their own electricity. Phase 1 of the programme started with the feasibility stage in December 2018, as this phase of the programme had to be completed before the end of the feed-in tariff in March 2019.

It was a real joy to work with David and the estates team at TWHF. They are a very professional and forward-thinking MAT that has really focused on improving teaching and learning environments for their students.

Our teams have fed back that their site managers were excellent and could not have been more helpful during the installation of the solar
— Mark Stevenson - MD - Bright Spark Energy

The programme was commissioned by the federation for a total of 360KWp in 11 PV systems installed across 10 schools. Work started on the first project on the 6th February 2019 and the programme rolled on for seven weeks.

High Level Project Figures:

  • Over 1,200 solar panels installed;

  • Annual generation of approx 354,280 kWhs of renewable energy per annum;

  • Reduction in CO2 of approx 184,225 kg/yr;

Our installation teams were working during term-time on the projects, so getting the school communities involved in the project was really important to us.  Some of our team had the opportunity to present to classes and assemblies to tell the students about what we were doing and how it would help them protect the environment.
